Both models are made of polyester. They are well built and durable. However, in terms of color choices, Timbuk2 Command is slightly better than Timbuk2 Commute. Timbuk2 Command comes with a lot more color choices, such as Abyss, Army, Black/Gunmetal, Oxide/Adobe, and Diablo. On the other hand, Timbuk2 Commute has fewer color choices. There are Diablo, Dark Brown, Grey/Cement, also some blue variants.
Laptop Compartment
Since both models are TSA compliant, they have their laptop sleeves placed outside the main pockets. However, Timbuk2 Command’s laptop sleeve is not very salient, with a simple, unpronounced zipper closure. On the other hand, Timbuk2 Commute’s laptop sleeve is very apparent, almost like a separate piece that is stitched onto the side of the bag. The zipper closure extends to the sides, down to the bottom of the bag. We must say that Timbuk2 Command looks more elegant than Timbuk2 Commute due to these designs.
Organization
Feature-wise, though, Timbuk2 Commute is very minimalistic. There is just a front pocket for putting your smartphone. On the other hand, Timbuk2 Command has a tricot-lined floating pocket to protect your glasses or smartphone and internal organizer pockets for pens and other small objects. There is an external zipper pocket on the side of the bag for quick access to power bricks and cords, and the bag has been designed with a Napoleon-style side-entry pocket for simple access without undoing the flap.
Additional Features
Timbuk2 Commute has reflective hits for visibility at night. On the other hand, Timbuk2 Command has been geared more towards stealth; there are integrated bag silencers to keep it quiet when moving. This feature can be more useful than what you would expect, very practical if you don’t want to attract attention.

Timbuk2 Command is much better due to the more abundant color choices, more elegant design, and better organization features. The bag silencers are particularly awesome. Nevertheless, Timbuk2 Commute is still a viable alternative if you prefer a smaller bag.
