Osprey Atmos 65 vs Exos 58

You are now looking for a new backpack. If you are a light backpacker, you don’t actually need a very large bag. Something with 50 – 60 liters of capacity is usually sufficient for a light backpacker. By taking only the things that you will actually need, you can keep the total weight low enough in order to keep you back happy. There are two models from Osprey that may have captured your attention: Osprey Atmos 65 and Osprey Exos 58. Both are great bags for light backpackers, but which one is the most suitable for you?

Design
As indicated by the name, Osprey Atmos 65 is the one bigger and heavier. The bag is coming with 65 liters total capacity, featuring a highly durable nylon construction. It comes with an adjustable harness system that enables the user to customize the torso length easily using the easy-release cams, as well as the Fit-on-the-Fly hip belt pads that extend up to 5” in order to provide a custom fit on different hip sizes. There is an internal reservoir sleeve in the main body for easily loading and unloading a hydration pack. The floating top lid is extendable and removable for oversized loads, and there is also a trekking pole attachment.

Depending on your body size, you may find Osprey Exos 58 either fitting more properly or being too tight. Compared to Osprey Atmos 65, Osprey Exos 58 is indeed smaller. The ExoFoam sewn-in hipbelt features a seamless mesh-covered foam for comfort, and the 6065 aluminum alloy peripheral frame ensures exceptional load carrying support. There is an internal sewn-in back panel sleeve with a clip attachment, which is able to accommodate a hydration pack up to 3 liters of capacity. The floating top pocket is removable, and the internal key clip and under-lid zippered mesh pocket allow for some organization.

Performance
Even though Osprey Atmos 65 is generally more durable than Osprey 58, in addition to having a bigger capacity, it is not exactly as comfortable as Osprey Exos 58. The problem with Osprey 65 is that it can be extremely heavy. The hip belt pockets are too small, and the water bottle pockets are way too small even for a protein bar. On the other hand, Osprey Exos 58 is much more comfortable to wear. The pockets are relatively bigger, big enough to actually carry bottles and protein bars, and the back has decent breathability.
